This handmade quirky and whimsical ceramic tea drainer will make your tea time special. It features a cute drawing of a white bear with stripy hat. It is one of a kind, hand-built from the bottom to the top using pinching and slab building techniques.
The tea drainer is hand-painted using underglazes (engobes) and a decoration technique called sgraffito. This means that the drawing is painted on the clay object whilst the clay is still wet, yet has reached the so-called ‘leather hard’ stage. After application of the underglaze, the details of the design are carefully carved out by hand.
Once the ceramic object has dried completely, it is fired in a kiln at 1000 degrees C to bisque. Then it is covered with food safe transparent glaze, and fired again at the same temperature.
The tea drainer can be placed in a dishwasher (top shelf), but I recommend washing it by hand.
