IT’S HANDMADE

This listing is for a one of a kind ceramic planter with a hand-carved sgraffito folk style design featuring a face and a bird design on the outside. The design is created with colorful underglazes, using sgraffito technique. Sgraffito means decorating the ceramic item while it is still unfired, and has dried to leather-hard stage.

This original clay planter is entirely hand-built and hand-painted using various underglazes and food-safe transparent glaze.

THE PROCESS

At first I built the planter using fine terracotta clay. Then I let it dry. Once the softness of the clay had reached the ‘leather-hard’ stage, I applied colorful underglazes and drew as well as carved out the design with folk-style motif and let it dry fully.

Next, the decorated piece went into the kiln to be bisque-fired at 1000 degrees Celsius. Then I added transparent glaze, and it went into the kiln again for the second firing.

This original small planter is very tactile, with carved lines against smooth transparent glazes, that add to it’s charm.

The planter can be put in a dishwasher, but I would recommend washing it by hand.
